At the Drive-In ‘Relationship of Command’. 2xLP /4000 Orange. Expensive in the stores, already much more expensive on eBay now. It’s advertised as a RSD only color, so hopefully there is another pressing coming for the many who missed out.

Botch ‘American Nervoso’. 2xLP /3000. Some copies are on green vinyl. Remixed and Remastered.

Cave In ‘Until Your Heart Stops’. 2xLP /2000. Remastered. Some copies are on orange w/ black haze.

Deftones ‘Live Vol.1’ (Selections from Adrenaline). /3000. Vinyl only release, remastered from original tapes by Bernie Grundman. First in a series of 7 live releases.

Finally, the fantastic debut album from Weezer (‘the blue album’) has received a worthy vinyl release. Half-speed remastered by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab from the original master tapes, it sounds better than ever.

Wider sound stage, broader dynamic range, more defined and distinct sound of instruments. Quite simply, you hear so much MORE. It’s so uncompressed in comparison to previous masters, I actually had to turn my receiver up a couple notches higher than normal.

A limited, numbered pressing (of 5000 I believe) in a thick gatefold jacket, this is the version to have.

I don’t know exactly what keeps me from saying it sounds ‘perfect’, but it is darn close. Get it.

Music: 10/10

Sound: 9.5/10

Presentation: 10/10

The 6th full length from this tiny, talented lady (and first to see an official vinyl pressing) marks a return to guitar-centered instrumental music.

Here’s hoping Velour Recordings considers giving some of her back catalog the wax treatment.

If you’ve never heard of King and the wonderful, impressive sounds she can make, do it now.

Minus the Bear 'Infinity Overhead'

On August 28th, Minus the Bear released their 5th studio album entitled Infinity Overhead on Dangerbird Records.

The standard vinyl edition is pressed on very nice 180 gram clear vinyl inside a gatefold jacket with a printed inner sleeve.

As with their previous effort Omni, this one will divide fans, but maybe not to that extent. In my opinion, older fans who love the sound of They Make Beer Commercials Like This and Menos el Oso will really enjoy the track ‘Diamond Lightning’, while fans who enjoyed the more synthetic sound of Omni will enjoy ‘Lonely Gun’. And I think the rest pretty much falls somewhere in between with varying degrees of success.

Overall, it’s another good album by Minus the Bear. Personally, I believe it could have been much better. But, after being very impressive for many years, it’s hard to stay impressive no matter how much you are beloved or how good you are at what you do. So, at least their still doing it and doing it well.

I bet there are some B-sides that may end up being a bit more impressive.

Originally released in 1998, this long out of print LP was finally reissued by Fearless Records this past July.

Hot Topic received an exclusive ‘gray w/hot pink splatter’ variant, limited to 2000 copies. Clear vinyl is available through all other outlets.

A nice reissue overall, and very pleasing to fans of the band who don’t have to pay $$$ for an original pressing.

Fingers crossed that ‘Relationship of Command’ is coming up soon …

Mos Def ‘Black on Both Sides’, 1999.

I’ve searched for this for 3 1/2 years. Finally own an original pressing.

This album is one of the all time greatest in Hip Hop music, hands down. Incredible lyrics delivered with impeccable flow over excellent beats.

I wish I could say I was more impressed with the sound of the pressing, but to finally own it is very satisfying. One holy grail has been crossed off the list.

The last part of this year is looking to be a great time to be a vinyl lover. There are some new albums and re-issues coming that I am personally very excited about, and it prompted me to start a new column : VINYL NEWS.

SEPTEMBER 11:

Shop Radio Cast and Dine Alone Records have facilitated a long awaited vinyl reissue of Quicksand’s seminal 1993 debut ‘Slip’. It will be released on 3 different shades of 180 gram vinyl. SRC have 500 copes each of Black/Red swirl and Yellow/Green swirl, while Dine Alone Records have 500 on black vinyl.

It has been remastered for vinyl and will be in a gatefold jacket. Very much looking forward to this one, and I will certainly feature it here at Vinyl Fury once it arrives.

SEPTEMBER 18:

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, long renowned for their excellent half speed masters of great albums, will release their version of Weezer’s 1994 self-titled debut (affectionately known as ‘The Blue Album’).

This has been remastered from the original tapes and is said to have excellent dynamic range and overall presence. It is a limited numbered pressing (probably 5000) and is currently available for pre-order pretty much everywhere for about $30.
