Record Store Day 2013
At the Drive-In ‘Relationship of Command’. 2xLP /4000 Orange. Expensive in the stores, already much more expensive on eBay now. It’s advertised as a RSD only color, so hopefully there is another pressing coming for the many who missed out. Botch ‘American Nervoso’. 2xLP /3000. Some copies are on green vinyl. Remixed and Remastered. Cave In ‘Until Your...

Weezer 'Weezer' (MoFi Remaster)
Finally, the fantastic debut album from Weezer (‘the blue album’) has received a worthy vinyl release. Half-speed remastered by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab from the original master tapes, it sounds better than ever. Wider sound stage, broader dynamic range, more defined and distinct sound of instruments. Quite simply, you hear so much MORE. It’s so uncompressed in comparison to...

Check out this video on Music Millennium, a great record store I frequent here in Portland, Oregon. They recently moved all their vinyl from their rickety cramped upstairs to a dedicated room and it’s lovely. Terry is a legend. musicmillennium.com

Collector Profile : Zach Boes
Zach Boes of Portland, Oregon sits down with me to talk about his love of music, vinyl, and other things that are good. After nearly 4 years, he has amassed a sizeable collection of great music, new and old. Hang with us for a bit. Two turntables and a beard. Self-titled debut from Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground, spinning in the background. His most expensive record purchase...

Minus the Bear 'Infinity Overhead'
On August 28th, Minus the Bear released their 5th studio album entitled Infinity Overhead on Dangerbird Records. The standard vinyl edition is pressed on very nice 180 gram clear vinyl inside a gatefold jacket with a printed inner sleeve. As with their previous effort Omni, this one will divide fans, but maybe not to that extent. In my opinion, older fans who love the sound of They Make Beer...

At the Drive-in 'in/CASINO/OUT'
Originally released in 1998, this long out of print LP was finally reissued by Fearless Records this past July. Hot Topic received an exclusive ‘gray w/hot pink splatter’ variant, limited to 2000 copies. Clear vinyl is available through all other outlets. A nice reissue overall, and very pleasing to fans of the band who don’t have to pay $$$ for an original pressing. Fingers...

Vinyl News: August 2012
The last part of this year is looking to be a great time to be a vinyl lover. There are some new albums and re-issues coming that I am personally very excited about, and it prompted me to start a new column :  VINYL NEWS. SEPTEMBER 11: Shop Radio Cast and Dine Alone Records have facilitated a long awaited vinyl reissue of Quicksand’s seminal 1993 debut ‘Slip’. It will be...

One Year
Hello viewers, strangers, friends, fellow vinyl lovers. I would just like to take a minute to say thanks. This month marks one year since the blog went live. The response to this little idea has been wonderful. It’s been fun to share my thoughts on music, records, pressings, etc.  vinylfury.com is registered for another year. I look forward to our time together. The blog recently...

Sigur Rós 'Valtari'
4 years after the upbeat ‘Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust’, Icelandic darlings Sigur Rós have returned with a more ambient and moody release more akin to 2002’s ‘( )’. It is beautiful, it is impressive, it is certainly Sigur Rós. The U.S. vinyl pressing is released by XL Recordings on 150 gram black vinyl, housed in a gatefold jacket with black inner...

Refused 'The Shape of Punk to Come'
/2000 Red (Record Store Day 2012) The seminal and final (?) album from Refused. Originally released as a single LP in 1998, it was remastered as a 2xLP in 2010. This is a reissue of that release on lovely red vinyl. This edition was also available at the recent U.S. shows, the band’s first return to the stage in 14 years. Also included is the remastered album on CD as well the...

Empire Records (Soundtrack)
/5000 individually numbered on gold vinyl (RSD ‘12 Exclusive) For some reason, the platinum selling soundtrack to this cult classic film about friends and lovers who work at a record store was only available on CD upon its release in 1995. The soundtrack contains songs from classic 90s alternative rock bands like The Cranberries, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Better Than Ezra, and Gin Blossoms...

Snapcase 'Progression Through Unlearning'
Originally released in 1997, Snapcase’s second album was repressed in a limited edition of 900 copies on opaque yellow vinyl for Record Store Day 2012. This release is considered revolutionary by many fans of hardcore music, with good reason. An excellent choice of reissue by Victory Records. Music: 9/10 Sound: 8.5/10 Presentation: 9/10

Sigur Rós 'Hvarf/Heim'
/1250 on clear light green vinyl (Record Store Day 2012 Exclusive) Originally released in 2007 as a double CD package, this fantastic effort from the Icelandic wonders has finally seen a vinyl pressing. However, it’s a very small one in the scheme of things. This band and their vinyl releases are attractive to ‘flippers’, who are currently selling copies of this on ebay for...

Botch 'An Anthology of Dead Ends'
Originally released as a 10” in 2002, the final studio recording from Botch has been remastered on 12” vinyl at 45rpm. This was released on Record Store Day this year on 180 gram vinyl in Black, Red, Gold, and Clear variants.  The outer and inner sleeves are also nice and sturdy. A quality presentation from Hydra Head Records. The official RSD list stated this was limited to 750...

Fellow Vinyl Lover's Blog →
I recently received an email from a gentleman named Henrik in Denmark. He said that after viewing my blog he decided to start one of his own. So far, it’s looking great! He’s taking some really neat photos. I especially enjoy his approach to shooting gatefold covers. Check it out @ http://plader.tumblr.com/ Thanks Henrik, I am truly flattered. p.s. His words are in Danish, but Google...

'Vanilla Sky' Original Soundtrack
Released by Classic Records on 200 gram vinyl. Featuring tracks from Jeff Buckley, Sigur Rós, R.E.M., Radiohead, Peter Gabriel, and many more. Limited to 2500 numbered copies. Includes several pages of photos from the set of the 2001 film (highly overlooked in my opinion) starring Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, and Jason Lee. Directed by Cameron Crowe, who collected an amazing group of songs that...

Jeff Buckley 'Live at Sin-é'
Released in late 1993 on Columbia Records, this 4 song EP served as Jeff Buckley’s first commercial solo release. The songs, two originals and two covers, were recorded at the tiny coffee shop in New York City’s east village where Jeff would frequently play.  This was scored on Ebay for a mere $15, when it usually sells for around $70. It is a personal highlight of record...

Deftones 'Saturday Night Wrist'
/2000 Green, available exclusively from Hot Topic. Originally released as a 2xLP in 2006, the album has been re-cut on a single LP. The original didn’t sound all that great, and fortunately this at least doesn’t sound any worse. But, it does have a 51:30 running time which makes it a tight squeeze. This can now also be found, along with ‘Deftones’ (2003) on black...

Tool - Lateralus (2xLP Picture Disc)
Two 180 gram picture discs. As you can imagine, there is some surface noise. It is more apparent in some spots than others, but the music itself still sounds quite good. The drums especially benefit from expanded dynamic range. The deadwax reveals the initials CB, for Chris Bellman of Bernie Grundman Mastering. That is a good thing. Originally released in 2001, the album received the vinyl...
